Build an SEO-friendly website from day one
Most businesses start thinking about SEO after their website is already built. That is the biggest reason new websites fail to rank.
If you want your website to show up on Google, bring in qualified traffic, and become a real growth channel instead of an online brochure, SEO cannot be an afterthought. It has to guide the project from the first planning session to launch day and long after.
Based on our experience building and optimizing websites for brands across the French Riviera and internationally, here is the approach that actually works.

The most common mistake: building first, optimizing later
The number-one reason websites struggle to rank is simple:
There was no SEO strategy before the design began.
Before choosing a template, picking colors, or writing a single sentence, you need a clear site architecture. At minimum, every new website should launch with:
• Homepage
• Services (or Product) overview
• Individual service/product pages
• Contact page
• Blog page (posts can come later)
Each service must have its own dedicated page.
Google indexes topics and not collections of topics bundled together.
If you offer “Luxury Villa Rentals,” “Private Chef Services,” and “Event Planning,” each needs its own URL. Do not make Google guess.
SEO starts before design, not after
At Rêve, we build websites the same way we build ad campaigns: with strategy first.
Before design begins, we define:
• The purpose of every page
• The primary keyword the page should rank for
• The SEO title, meta description, and H1
• A clear content structure and messaging hierarchy
Example:
Service: “Teeth Whitening in Nice”
Title Tag: Teeth Whitening Nice | Your Clinic Name
Meta Description: A concise, keyword-rich explanation
H1: Teeth Whitening Nice
Content: Structured, informative, ready before visual design starts
This prevents the all-too-common scenario where the design team delivers a beautiful layout that cannot rank.
Non-negotiables when building an SEO-ready website
If you want your website to compete today, these fundamentals are not optional:
1. Speed above everything
Upload WebP images.
Compress everything.
Avoid bloated themes.
A slow site kills your rankings and fixing it later often means rebuilding half the site.
2. Only one H1 per page
Heading tags are not a design tool.
They are a communication tool for search engines.
One page = one topic = one H1.
3. Mobile-first, not desktop-first
Most users will never see your desktop design.
If your mobile layout is confusing, requires too many taps, or hides key information, Google will not reward it.
4. Clean, readable URLs
Good:
/teeth-whitening-nice
Bad:
/services/abc123/teeth-whitening-nice-best-dental-care-low-price
Short. Clear. Human-friendly.
Google does not reward keyword stuffing.
Case Study: When SEO builds a business from scratch
One of our clients launched with zero online presence.
New domain, new brand, no rankings.
We built their website with SEO as the foundation, not an add-on.
Within two years:
• Dominated 150+ keywords
• Grew from a small operation into a fully scaled business
• Tripled their revenue
• Their website became their biggest sales engine
No ads.
No influencers.
Just solid SEO architecture and consistent content.
That is the power of doing things correctly from day one.
What happens when you redesign without SEO: a cautionary tale
Redesigning a site without SEO guidance is one of the easiest ways to destroy years of progress.
We once onboarded a client who redesigned their entire website without considering SEO. The result:
• Every URL changed
• All content was replaced
• Page structures were unrecognizable to Google
Their rankings collapsed overnight.
Changing URLs without proper redirects is the digital equivalent of moving your business without telling anyone.
If backlinks point to old URLs, your authority disappears with them.
If you redesign:
• Keep URLs the same
• Maintain structure
• Preserve core content
• Only redirect when absolutely necessary
Anything else puts your traffic at risk.
Best CMS platforms for SEO: our recommendations
WordPress
The most flexible and SEO-friendly platform for service-based businesses.
Shopify
Excellent for e-commerce with clean architecture and simple optimization tools.
Wix & Squarespace
Beginner friendly, visually appealing, but limited for long-term SEO.
Fine for simple sites, not ideal for those wanting to scale visibility. Sincerely DON’T recommend if you want to grow.
How many pages should you launch with?
For most businesses, 5 to 30 pages is the ideal starting range.
What matters is not quantity — but structure.
Launch with:
• Homepage
• Contact
• Blog
• Services overview
• Every service page fully optimized
Blog content can come later; architecture cannot.
Our keyword research approach for new websites
We focus on keywords that actually drive business:
• High-intent “money” keywords
• Local keywords
• Low-competition, high-opportunity phrases
• Product or category terms for e-commerce
For example, if someone searches “villa rental Nice”, your page needs:
• The keyword in strategic places
• Clear H2 and H3 sections
• Strong internal linking
• Supporting blog posts over time
After launch, publish 1–2 blog posts per week, each linking back to a core service page. This creates topical authority.
A truth most business owners never hear
Most web designers misuse heading tags.
Some use H1s multiple times just to make text visually larger.
This confuses Google, weakens your SEO, and hurts your rankings.
Design cannot be prioritized over structure — not if you expect to rank.
SEO is not decoration.
It is architecture.
What every business owner should know before launch
A brand new domain does not rank instantly.
Google needs 6–12 months to trust a new website.
Growth comes from:
• Valuable content
• Clear structure
• Internal links
• Time
• Consistency
This is why SEO must start the moment you begin planning your website — not when everything is already finished.
